STREAMER OR PULLING FLIES

CHATTO'S SMELT

(STREAMER, PULLING FLY, LOCH STYLE FLY, ATTRACTOR FLY OR SALMON TYPE FLY)

I first tied this fly specifically as a middle dropper fly for the FFA Southern Zone Championships held at Dixieland in March 2003. Dixieland is a unique private fishery of seventeen dams just outside Adaminaby in high country NSW. Whilst the owners tell me there are populations of Brown and Brook trout in the dams by far the dominant species is triploid Rainbow trout. These fish respond well to fast stripping and I like to use a reasonably streamlined attractor as a middle drop fly. I only used the fly in one session but finished up with a record 16 fish ranging from 59 cm down to 24 cm for the session. Whilst a few were caught on this smelt pattern others were caught on the point fly or the top fly. Perhaps the smelt pattern attracted them - I don't know for sure but I'll certainly continue to include this fly in my arsenal.  I have since used the fly many times on lake Jindabyne both alone and in a team with on-going success.
