STREAMERS & PULLING FLIES

PATRIOT

I am not sure of the source of this fly but I keep it on hand for use as a deep water fly that I use as a search pattern. I am sure that the same pattern would work equally well in black or brown colour but I already carry weighted woolly buggers in those colours that I use for the same purpose.

MATERIALS:

Size - 8 to 10  long shank
Thread  - Olive
Eyes - Bead chain
Weight - Lead wire
Tail, Body & head  - Olive rabbit fur
A)
  1. Wind thread along the first 1/3 of the hook shank and then return the thread half way back to the eye of the hook.
  2. Tie in a set of bead chain eyes using figure of eight wraps or horizontal wraps.
  3. Take the thread down to  above the point of the hook and tie in a short tail of rabbit fur.

B)
  1. If your going to add additional weight do it now by wrapping the desired amount of lead along the hook shank directly behind the eyes.
  2. Return the thread to behind the eyes and tie in a bunch of deer hair  that extend just a little shorter than the tail.

C)

Rotate the hook in the vice and tie in additional bunches of rabbit fur until a complete body is formed.

D)

Create a dubbing loop and load it with rabbit fur.

E)

Twist the loaded dubbing loop into a rope.

F)
  1. Take a couple of turns of the dubbing loop rope behind the eyes and then a figure of  eight wrap of the rope around the eyes and tie it off in front of the eyes.
  2. Trim the excess dubbing loop rope.
  3. Build up a net head of thread in front of the eyes, whip finish and varnish the thread.
