NYMPHS & WETS

RUBBER LEGGED STONEFLY

Stoneflies thrive in the rubble of cold well oxygenated rivers & streams. They are an available food source throughout the season and fish may feed on them to the exclusion of all other food sources particularly during hatches. The nymphs crawl along the bottom and exit the water at the stream or river edge where they hatch into stoneflies. To imitate this action the fly must be well weighted. Colours include browns, olives, tans and blacks.

MATERIALS:
Hook  -  8 to 12 Long Shank.
Weight   - Fine lead wire.
Thread  -  To suit colour.
Tail & antenna  - Turkey biot.
Ribbing  -  Fine copper wire.
Body, thorax & head - Squirrel dubbing in colour to suit.
Wing case - Three separate sections of turkey feather clipped to shape and lacquered prior to tying.
Legs  -  Rubber to suit colour.

A)
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns from the eye of the hook to the bend.
  2. Add lead wire to the centre 2/3 of the hook.
  3. Tie in a matching set of turkey biots V style for the tail.
  4. Tie in a length of fine copper wire.
  5. Tie in a matching set of turkey biots V style for the antenna.
  6. Tie in a little dubbing in front of and behind the lead wire to form a tapered under-body.
  7. Dub the body to form a neat tapered shape.
  8. Rib the body with the copper wire with between 8 & 10 segments.

B)

  1. After lacquering a section of turkey feather and letting it dry cut three segments of turkey tail feather for use as the wing case segments.

C)
  1. Tie the first section of prepared wing case segment over the body of the fly so that the V of the wing cases is facing the tail of the fly and about half way along the hook.
  2. Tie in a length of rubber leg material on each side of the fly at the same point.
  3. Now tie a little dubbing over the tread securing the first wing case segment and the legs to hide the thread.

D)
  1. Tie in the second prepared wing case segment and again hide the thread with a little dubbing.
  2. Repeat this process with the third wing case segment that should be tied in directly behind the eye of the hook.
  3. Whip finish & varnish.
