NYMPHS & WETS

PHEASANT TAIL NYMPH VARIANTS

The Pheasant Tail Nymph is a New Zealand pattern designed to suggest a small "Deleatidium vernal" Mayfly. Whilst that family doesn't extend to Australia I suggest you still carry Pheasant Tail Nymphs or one or two of its variants in a couple of sizes because they are very buggy and particularly useful in faster water. The original tie is as shown in the first picture. The first variant has legs tied in beard style and the second variant has the legs and the thorax covered with peacock herl.

MATERIALS FOR VARIANTS:

Hook Size - 8 to 18 nymph or caddis hook ( I carry the two variants in size 10 and size 16)
Thread
- Brown
Tail and body - Pheasant tail fibres
Ribbing and weight - Copper wire
Thorax - Copper wire either exposed or covered with peacock herl or dubbing
Wing casing - Pheasant tail fibres
Hackle - Church window hackle fibers.

A)

  1. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in 3 to 5 long Pheasant tail fibres with the tips forming a tail equal in length to the length of the hook shank. Resist the temptation to make the tail too bulky and only tie it in at the bend of the hook.

B)

Tie in a length of copper wire about 3/4 of the way up the hook shank.

C)

  1. Tie the copper wire along the top of the hook shank all the way to the bend of the hook.
  2. Take just one twist of the butt ends of the tail hackles around the copper wire to form a loosely defined rope.

D)

  1. Take the thread 3/4 of the way along the hook shank toward the eye of the hook.
  2. Wind the  Pheasant tail fibers and copper wire rope forward to the thread in touching turns.
  3. Trim the remaining butt ends of the hackle.

E)

  1. Tie in a bunch of pheasant tail fibers two thirds of the way along the shank of the hook.
  2. If your going to cover the thorax with peacock herl tie a couple of herl in now.

D)

Tie in about 6 or 8 church window fibers in the form of a tail projecting in front of the hook.

E)
  1. Pick the copper wire up and build up a neat thorax of copper wire.
  2. Trim the copper wire.
  3. If your going to cover the thorax with peacock herl form the herl into a rope around the thread and cover the thorax with touching turns of herl rope.
  4. Tie the herl rope off and trim the butt ends of the herl.
  5. Stroke the tips of the church window fibers backward and downward to represent the legs of the nymph.

F)

Pull the wing  casing material over the top of the thorax and tie if off just behind the eye of the hook.

G)

  1. Trim the butt ends of the thorax material.
  2. Build up a neat head, whip finish and trim the thread.
  3. Apply a coat of head cement along the top of the fly and the thread head.
