NYMPHS & WETS

EGG

Tied to imitate eggs that are floating down a stream these egg flies should be fished in conjunction with a weighted nymph  to get them into the zone.

MATERIALS:

Hook -  Size 8 to 14 Curved Caddis
Thread  - Fish roe coloured
Weight  - Lead wire or optional dumb bell eyes as in the third photo
Egg  - Fish roe coloured glow bug yarn

A)

If your adding dumbbell eyes do that first otherwise just wind the thread about 1/3 of the way down the shank of the hook and then back to the 75% position.

B)

Take a thick strand of glow bug yarn and tie that in with a couple of firm wraps of thread.

C)

Rotate the hook in the vice and tie in similar thick strands of glow bug yarn making sure that each is locked into position by firm wraps of thread in the same position as the one before. Generally there is only room to tie two strands of yarn in on a size 14 hook and three on a size 10 hook

D)

  1. Take the thread forward and tie it off in front of the eyes if you have fitted any.
  2. In any case build up a nice round eye like ball of thread directly behind the eye of the hook. whip finish, trim the thread and varnish the thread ball.
  3. Take the fly out of the vice and with a sharp pair of scissors trim the yarn into an egg shape and size.
