LOCH STYLE FLIES

PALMER VARIANTS

(LOCH STYLE FLY OR ATTRACTOR FLY)

To Palmer a fly is to wind a hackle along the body forming segments. This technique was introduce by a chap named Palmer hence the name. The Soldier Palmer is an older style of Palmered Fly whereas the Pilchard Palmer and Carrot Palmer are flies I made up to fit a gap for a green flashy fly and a carrot type fly in my arsenal.

MATERIALS FOR SOLDIER PALMER:

Hook Size - 10 to 14
Thread - Black
Tag - Red Wool or red marabou
Body - Red wool dubbing
Ribbing - Copper wire
Hackle - Red Hackle
Head - Black thread

A)
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in the tail or tag. If its a tag it should be shorter than the gape of the hook and if its a tail it should be equal in length to the shank of the hook.
  3. Tie in a length of copper wire.

B)
  1. Dub on the body.
  2. Tie in the hackle directly behind the eye of the hook.

C)
  1. Wind the hackle two or three times directly behind the eye of the hook and then palmer it back along the fly to the bend of the hook creating 3 or 4 segments.
  2. Hold the hackle in place with one hand and pick up the copper wire with the other.
  3. Wind the copper wire along the fly forming 3 or 4 segments that cross over the hackle segments. The copper wire should be tight as it holds the hackle secure in place.
  4. Break the copper wire of behind the eye of the hook.
  5. Stroke the lead hackle fibers back slightly , build up a neat head, whip finish and varnish.
