LOCH STYLE FLIES
CHATTO'S LOCH NYMPH(NYMPH OR
LOCH STYLE
FLY)
In my earlier days of competition fly
fishing two of the flies that served me well were the
Montana Nymph and strangely enough
the Fuzzy Wuzzy. I tied these flies on especially when there were
rainbows around. The first is an American stone fly imitation and the
second is a New Zealand yabby imitation. As I finessed my loch style fly
fishing I found many other other flies that worked in similar
situations. Evolution being what it is, as time has passed, so has my
comfort with the Montana Nymph and the Fuzzy Wuzzy and I now find that
in situations where either of those flies would have previously been
tied on I now give my loch Nymph a swim. The Loch Nymph has elements
common to both its predecessors. Its a buggy thick set leggy fly with a
touch of either red, yellow or orange. With its flash
of colour this is a great
attractor
pattern in a team of loch flies.
MATERIALS:
Hook
Size - 8
to 12
long
shank
Thread - Black
Tail - Black cock
hackle fibers
Ribbing - fine silver wire
Underbody
-
Black wool
Overbody - Black seals fur
Wing Casing - 3mm black stretch back
Thorax - Coloured
seals fur
Legs - Fuzzeled body and thorax
A)
- Wind the thread from the 95% position to the bend of
the hook.
- Tie in a tail of hackle fibers. I think the best
hackle fibers are those that in the transition zone just above the
filoplume of the hackle. They tend to be softer than the fibers on the
main part of the hackle and consequently impart more movement when the
fly is fished.
- Tie in a length of ribbing wire at the bend of the hook.
- Tie in a strand of wool just a little in front of the bend
of the hook.

|
B)
- using the wool build up a nice nymph shaped body.
- Tie the wool off and trim the excess.
|
|
| C)
Dub on a seals fur body over the rear 3/5 of the fly. |
|
D)
- Wind the ribbing wire forward forming 4 or 5 segments on the
rear 3/5 of the fly.
- I generally take the wire forward to the eye of the hook and
break it of after taking one wrap of the wire round the bare
hook shank behind the eye of the fly.
- Tie in a length of wing casing material at the 3/5 position.
|
|
E)
- Dub a thorax of seals fur over the front 2/5 of the fly.
- Pull the wing casing over the top of the fly and tie it off
directly behind the eye of the hook.
- Trim the excess wing casing material and build up a neat
head.
- Whip finish and varnish the head.

Using a piece of Velcro tease out some of the thorax seals fur to
represent legs. |
