LOCH STYLE FLIES

FUR FLY

(WET FLY OR LOCH STYLE FLY)

Conceptually these are a very simple fly but when tied with the right materials and in the right density they are a great all round fly. You can use them as a stream fly or for polaroiding or prospecting but in my opinion they are at their best when used as an attractor fly in a team of loch style flies.

MATERIALS:

Hook Size - 10-14 long shank
Thread - Blood red
Tail and body - Rabbit fur

A)
  1. Wind the thread in touching turns to the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in a tail of rabbits fur equal in length to the length of the hook.
  3. For size #12 Fur Flies, which is my standard size, I add 5 wraps of .010mm lead wire (or 3 wraps of .015mm lead wire)  to ensure that they have negative buoyancy and also to impart and up and down swimming action.

B)
  1. Form a dubbing loop at the bend of the hook.
  2. Load the dubbing loop with rabbit fur.

C)

Twist the dubbing loop up to form a dubbing rope.

D)
  1. Wind the dubbing rope forward in touching turns to the eye of the hook.
  2. Tie the dubbing rope off and trim the excess.
  3. Build up a nice head of thread.
  4. Whip finish the thread and varnish the head of the fly
