SALTWATER - INSHORE

SHRIMP SHELL PRAWN

A very innovative prawn pattern which is adaptable for both salt and freshwater use as well as being adaptable for shrimp, prawn, nipper and yabby representations. Whilst the sieves, feelers, nippers and body are tied in the conventional way the fly comes alive when a "SHRIMP SHELL" is fitted over the back of the tie to finish it off. Shrimp shells are available in clear, olive pearl, pearl, pink pearl and tan pearl and come in sizes to suit #2, #4 and #6 flies.

The shrimp shells also finish off a very nice nipper.                  GO TO FRESH WATER VERSIONS

A)
  1. Starting at the eye of the hook wind the thread to the bend of the hook.
  2. Tie in mouthparts and feelers about the same length as the shank of the hook.
  3. Tie in a hackle at the bend of the hook.

B)
  1. Dub on a thicker thorax on the first third of the hook shank and then a body that gradually tapers away to the eye of the hook.
  2. Return the thread to the back of the thorax.

C)
  1. Palmer the hackle along the thorax making just 4 or 5 wraps.
  2. Tie the hackle off with the thread and trim the excess.
  3. Trim off all of the hackles extending above the horizontal plane.

     4.  Mix a little 5 minute epoxy and place a little bit along the top of the fly.

D)
  1. Crease the shrimp shell down the centre and  place the shrimp shell into position on top of the body.
  2. Lock the shrimp shell in place with wraps of thread that follow the printed segments on the shrimp shell.
  3. Tie the thread off at the eye of the hook and whip finish and trim the thread.
  4. Paint the top of the shrimp shell with 5 minute epoxy.
  5. Rotate the fly until the epoxy is almost off and then invert the fly in the vice so that the epoxy hangs down a little from the shell forming a nice convex shape.
