SALTWATER - INSHORE

RIPPER

This is a great fly to rip through the water in front of Taylor, Australian Salmon and other pelagic estuary fish. With legs it also works well on flathead, bream, whiting and EP's.

MATERIALS:

Hook - Squidgy Resin Head #4-6
Thread - Clear Mono
Underbody  - White Super hair
Flash - A few strands of Talon Pearl Flash or Tiewell Krystalflash
Overbody - Olive Super Hair
Throat
- Red Floss

A)

  1. Wind the thread from behind the head to about half way down the exposed hook shank and then back toward the head stopping about 3mm from the head.
  2. Invert the hook in the vice and tie in a clump of white super hair so that it forma a tail that is about 1 to 1.5 times as long as the hook..

B)

Rotate the hook right way up and tie in a few strands of flashy material the length as the white super hair.

C)

Tie in a clump of white super hair above the hook the same length as the white super hair.

D)
  1. Tie in a colour of red super hair.
  2. If your going to add legs tie them in now "Chernobyl Ant" style.

E)

  1. Mix a small quantity of 5 minute epoxy and put a generous coating just behind the pre formed head of the fly and covering the tie in of the legs of the fly if you have tied them in.
  2.  Be careful not to allow the epoxy to encroach down the body as you want the body to be free moving.
  3. Rotate the fly whilst the epoxy goes off so as to ensure a nice symmetrical and round head. You can of course use an epoxy rotator to rotate a large number of flies or as you can see, with the aid of a pin and a cork three or four flies can be epoxied at the one time.
  4. When the fly is finished trim the body of the fly so that the finished fly is about one to 1.5 as long as the hook and so that the body is not too square at the end.
