DRY FLIES
CARROT
The day after my
50th birthday
I had arranged to have a days guided fishing with the Australian Fly
fishing
and casting champion Peter Hayes on Arthur's lake in the Tasmanian high
country. Two of the highlights of the day included the use of this fly.
One was
catching my first brown trout when lock style fishing with a three dry
fly
English style rig. The second was catching tailing trout using a rig of
a dry
with a small wet below. In both cases the fly at the top end of the rig
was the
carrot. This fly floats like a champion and if it does succumb to the
murky
depths then a simple false cast will revitalize it. It's a very visible
fly,
even in failing light, and whilst I can't imaging what the trout thinks
it is
they certainly like it.
