FISHING CV
- STEPHEN PETER
CHATTERTON. He has been involved with fishing ever since and fished extensively with lures before being introduced to fly fishing in 1993. Stephen is a committed (or committable) fly fisherman and with homes in both Jindabyne and Wollongong and as well as fishing in various trout, bass and estuary, catch and release, fly fishing competitions and guiding, when time permits, fishes sociably to ensure that he fishes at least twice per week on average. Around Wollongong there area number of fishing options. Lake Illawarra is still a favourite and many a pleasant hour are spent targeting whiting, flathead and bream both from boat and bank. Wollongong also has excellent offshore fly-fishing with regular runs of Australian Salmon, various Tuna, Dolphin fish and other pelagic species. A little further a field Stephen has accumulated an extensive knowledge of both the Minnamurra River and the Shoalhaven system where he regularly targets estuarine species. Stephen is also a keen bass fisherman and regularly targets this great native sports fish in the Shoalhaven lakes and upper reaches of the Shoalhaven and Kangaroo river systems. Trout fishing remains one of Stephens favourite past times and the passion of fly fishing to “wild” browns and rainbows led him to establish a second home on the shores of lake Jindabyne in 1998. He spends around a third of the year based at that home. His favourite fishery lake Jindabyne is at his door step, Lake Eucumbene is only 30 minutes away and many an hour are spent fly fishing from both bank and boat refining his lake fishing techniques and just having fun. Stephen is also a keen stream fisherman and regularly fishes the Mowamba, Thredbo and Gungarlin Rivers. Competitive in nature, and keen to share knowledge with others, Stephen regularly competes in fishing competitions for Trout, estuarine species and Bass. He has placed in the top three over the last few years in quite a few competitions including the Tasmanian One Fly 2005 competition which his team won and this year he won the NSW Southern Zone championships of Fly Fish Australia. Stephen is very team and community oriented, has great communication skills and often takes the lead in facilitating the sharing of information. Stephen really enjoys tying flies and ties all his own flies, runs at least one fly tying course each year and is constantly refining the flies that he utilises in his fishing and promotes to others. Stephen is a
member of a number fishing
clubs and

Stephen Chatterton was born in 1949 in Penrith England and his family immigrated to Australia in 1951. He grew up living around Wollongong learning much from his parents who were self employed for most of his formative years. Amongst their interests his parents owned the business known as the Normandie Private Hotel in North Wollongong during its halcyon years. The family lived and worked there and Stephen literally grew up in the hospitality industry. He took his
first
outside job at the age of 15 years as a
Bank Officer with the ANZ Bank. He worked with the bank until 1972 and
left to
take up a position in the finance industry. Stephen worked in the
finance
industry for four years in total attaining the rank of Accountant with
Alliance
Acceptance and Branch Manager with Mercantile Credits Ltd. In 1976 he
was
“poached” from his position in the finance
industry and took up a position of Accountant for a group of large
local
private companies. He thrived in that commercial environment and at the
time of
resigning from the group in late 1992, to concentrate on the running of
a
winery business that he and his wife Julie had purchased earlier that
year, was

Winery, Southern Steel Supplies, Surdex Steel, B&W Steel, Allied

and was Executive Director of a number of other companies in the group.
The winery business that Stephen & Julie had purchased was located at Yenda just outside Griffith and was called St. Peter’s Winery & Distillery. The facility was in the top 10% of wineries in Australia by production capacity and in comparative terms, on that basis, equal in size to approximately 20% of all of the combined wineries in the Hunter Valley of NSW. The winery grew and prospered under the control of Stephen Chatterton until he accepted a purchase offer in 2001. Stephen & Julie Chatterton also owned, but lease out, Jamberoo Valley Lodge which is a 40 room motel / reception / conference centre nestled in the foothills of Jamberoo Mountain just inland from Kiama. In 2007 they also sold that business and property. Stephen’s tertiary qualifications include a degree in commerce with majors in Economics and Accountancy and a certificate in Personnel Administration. He also became a Chartered Secretary, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Corporate Managers and Secretaries, a CPA and a Principal in Public Practice, a fellow of the Australian Society of Accountants and a fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. In 2004 Stephen completed a TAFE course in Transport and Distribution (Marine Studies) and became a Coxswain so that he could own and operate a commercial fishing boat within his own "fly fishing business" based at Kalkite on Lake Jindabyne where he also lives. Stephen is a keen family man, enjoys his weekly game of golf and is a committed (or committable) fly fisherman and fly tier and is an accredited Fly Fishing Guide, President of Fly Fish Australia and an active member of a number of fly fishing oriented organizations.
